Fidelity Stock Plan Services / NetBenefits documents, for a UK participant
Tracepaper is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Fidelity in any way. This page is written from Fidelity's own public guides and help pages, to help a UK participant find their own documents — not from any document with a real person's figures on it.
What each document is called, and where it is found
| Document | Where it is found | Does the app read it |
|---|---|---|
| Account statement (monthly, quarterly, yearly) | The Documents tab. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
| Trade confirmation | The Documents tab, alongside the account statements. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
| Release / vest confirmation | Not recorded yet. Vest detail is reachable from the stock plan account's distribution or vesting view, but no Fidelity guide found names a downloadable release confirmation as such. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
| 1099-B, with a separate Supplemental Information form (US persons only) | Fidelity.com/taxforms, and mailed. Fidelity issues the Supplemental Information form as its own separate document, not a section of the 1099-B. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
| Transaction history | Activities & Orders → History. | Not yet |
The release confirmation is the document worth the most to a UK computation — see what the app takes from it. It has been tested here on a layout modelled on Fidelity's own account statement and confirmation styles, not read from a document naming Fidelity itself.
What a UK participant does not receive
A UK participant who is not a US taxpayer will not receive a 1099-B — it is a US tax form, for US persons only. Fidelity issues a 1042-S instead, for US-source dividends and the US tax withheld, where a W-8BEN is on file. A W-8BEN lapses if it is not renewed every three years (it expires on 31 December); once it has lapsed, Fidelity withholds at 24% on gross sale proceeds and 30% on dividends instead of the lower treaty rate — a figure worth checking if either looks larger than expected.
Mistakes these documents invite for UK tax
- The cost basis on the document is not the UK base cost. Fidelity's cost basis figures follow US rules — usually what was paid, or nothing at all for a nil-cost RSU. Under UK Capital Gains Tax, the base cost of a nil-cost RSU is the market value at vest that was already charged to Income Tax, not the price paid (Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992 s119A; HMRC Capital Gains Manual CG56337 and CG56384).
- A dollar figure is not a sterling figure. Where a document states a value in dollars, UK Capital Gains Tax converts each leg separately — the acquisition at the rate for its own date, the disposal at the rate for its own date — never as a single dollar gain converted once, and never at the sterling actually received after a later transfer (HMRC Capital Gains Manual CG78310).
- Shares sold to cover the tax are still a disposal. HMRC treats the whole award as acquired first, so shares sold on the vest day to pay the tax are a same-day disposal in their own right — counted in the number of disposals and in the proceeds, even where the gain on them is nil (HMRC guidance, Employment Related Securities Bulletin 63, January 2026; ERSM140095).
