Documents it reads
Every document type it has a schema for, and an honest status for each
This is the whole list — every document type Tracepaper
has a schema for, what it takes from each one, and how far reading it has actually been
tested. Nothing below is invented: it is generated from the same schema files
(schema/*.schema.json) the reader itself is built against, so a document type
cannot appear here without a schema behind it, or have a schema without appearing here.
The three statuses, and what each one means
- Measured to the penny
- Reading has been checked, field by field, against a hand transcription of real documents from two employers' payroll, though most of that testing is one employer's payroll — 165 of 165 fields correct on one person's whole year, at one of the two employers, and 100% of the tax-driving fields across the 36 genuine documents in the measured run of September 2026. This status is never used for a document type that has only been tested on invented documents, however good the result on those looked.
- Reads — measured on invented documents only
- The reader has been tested against this document type on documents this project built itself, modelled on real layouts but with no real person's figures in them. It has not been measured against a genuine document of this type.
- Not yet
- The schema exists, but reading it has not been measured at all — including where the document is behind a login nobody on this project can reach, or where a source this page is built from says the document itself is unconfirmed.
Document types
One row per document type the app has a schema for, grouped by where it comes from. A document being read does not mean every figure on it is used — the middle column names what actually feeds a calculation.
| What it's called on the document | What the app takes from it | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Payroll | ||
| Payslip | Pay date, tax code and basis, NI category, every printed line (pay, RSU vest, ESPP, pension, student loan) with its year-to-date figure, and the net pay printed. | Measured to the penny |
| HMRC forms | ||
| P45, Details of employee leaving work | The leaving date, tax code and basis, and the pay and tax carried from the old employer to the new one. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
| P60, End of Year Certificate | Total pay and tax for the year in that employment, the final tax code, and the National Insurance figures by category. | Measured to the penny |
| P11D, Expenses and benefits | The cash equivalent of each benefit (private medical insurance, a company car, a loan and so on) that Self Assessment needs. | Measured to the penny |
| HMRC Annual Tax Summary | HMRC's own total income, tax by band and National Insurance for the year, used to cross-check the return's own figures against what HMRC separately holds. | Not yet |
| Share plan | ||
| Release confirmation (also called a vest confirmation, or "Confirmation of Release" — the name varies by administrator; see the administrator table below) | Shares released, the market value per share at vest, the amount charged to income tax, how the tax was paid (including shares sold to cover it) and the shares actually delivered. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
| Trade confirmation | Trade date, quantity, price, fees and net proceeds of a sale, including a same-day sale to cover the tax due at vest. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
| Form 1099-B, with its Supplemental Information sheet | Sale proceeds and cost basis per lot. Only a US taxpayer receives one; see what a UK participant gets instead. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
| Form 1042-S | US-source dividend income and the US tax withheld — the document a non-US participant who filed a W-8BEN receives, for the SA106 foreign pages. | Not yet |
| Stock plan account statement (quarterly or annual) | Holdings, awards, activity (releases, sales, dividends, withholding) and ESPP purchases for the period. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
| Investment and pension | ||
| Pension statement (annual benefit statement, contribution statement, or annual allowance / pension savings statement) | Contributions by source (employer, salary sacrifice, net pay, relief at source), growth, charges and the pension input amount. | Not yet |
| ISA statement | Subscriptions and withdrawals against the ISA allowance. Nothing here feeds a Self Assessment box; it only tracks the allowance. | Not yet |
| Bank or building society statement | Transactions that corroborate a figure from another document — a personal pension contribution with no provider statement, the date a payment left or arrived, or a salary credit matching a payslip's net pay. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
Share-plan administrators and payroll systems
What is known about where each administrator keeps its documents, drawn from public vendor guides, help pages and real export formats — never from a document with anyone's own figures on it, and never from an employer telling us. No employer is named on this page. Five of these have a fuller guide: what a document is called, where it is found, and the mistakes its figures invite for UK tax — see the broker guides.
| Administrator | What we know about its documents | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Fidelity Stock Plan Services / NetBenefits | Statements and trade confirmations sit in the Documents tab; a downloadable release confirmation is not named in any guide found. US persons get a 1099-B plus a separate Supplemental Information form. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
| Charles Schwab Equity Award Center | Publishes no participant sample. The 1099-B route (Statements → Tax Forms filter) and an Equity Awards history export (CSV/JSON, vest price and shares withheld per lot) are documented; a release confirmation is not. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
| Morgan Stanley at Work / Shareworks | Non-US Morgan Stanley at Work participants are served through E*TRADE's site, where a "Confirmation of Release" has been reported (unverified) and a CSV export of vest and sale data exists. Shareworks, a different platform under the same parent, has published nothing beyond guides written for US taxpayers. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
| E*TRADE | The platform non-US Morgan Stanley at Work participants use — see that row. Its own tax centre and orders/transaction sections are documented; the 1099-B supplement is a section of the 1099-B PDF rather than a separate form. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
| Computershare / EquatePlus | A statement comes from "Request Statement"; documents from the Library section. A UK SIP account shows a "Taxation Period end" and a "Holding Period end" date for each share lot. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
| Equiniti / Shareview | Nominee and dividend statements are viewable online; nothing found says what a Sharesave or SIP participant's own statement contains or is called. The single biggest documentation gap this project's research has found. | Not yet |
| J.P. Morgan Workplace / Global Shares | Tax documents sit under a "Tax Documents" tab (recently renamed from "Document Library"); transaction history is under a "Transactions" tab. Nothing further confirmed. | Not yet |
| UBS | The guides found describe printing a page, not where documents are kept or what they are called. Nothing usable found. | Not yet |
| Merrill | A combined Tax Reporting Statement stands in for separate 1099 forms; cost basis detail sits under Statements and Documents; the online activity view covers only 13 months, which can fall short of a UK tax year. | Not yet |
| Carta | Handles options and growth shares, not RSUs, so it mostly sits outside what this app computes. Its 1099-B supplement is opt-in with a mid-January deadline, so a UK participant is unlikely to receive either it or a 1099-B. | Not yet |
