Morgan Stanley at Work / E*TRADE documents, for a UK participant
Tracepaper is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Morgan Stanley, E*TRADE or Shareworks in any way. This page is written from their own public participant guides — including the guide written specifically for participants outside the US — not from any document with a real person's figures on it.
What each document is called, and where it is found
Morgan Stanley at Work participants outside the US are served on E*TRADE's own site, which is the single most useful fact here: the routes below are E*TRADE's. Shareworks is a different platform under the same parent company and renders differently — its own guides are written for US taxpayers and say nothing about a UK participant's documents, so it is not covered in the table below.
| Document | Where it is found | Does the app read it |
|---|---|---|
| Tax forms, including a 1099-B (US persons only) | Tax Documents, which opens on the Tax Center. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
| Confirmation of Release | Stock Plan → My Account → Gains and losses → expand the transaction → "View confirmation of release". Not recorded by any vendor guide found; reported on a support forum, so treat the exact route as unconfirmed until you see it yourself. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
| Releases Report / Withdrawals Report (CSV export) — vest date, price, quantity, net cash and share proceeds, tax payment method | An export from the Orders section of the stock plan account. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
| Account statements | Not recorded yet — the statement's own content is documented, but no guide found says exactly where it sits in the site. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
Unlike Fidelity, E*TRADE's cost-basis supplement is printed as a section of the 1099-B PDF itself, not a separate form — worth knowing before assuming a missing supplement means a missing page.
What a UK participant does not receive
A UK participant who is not a US taxpayer will not receive a 1099-B — it is a US tax form, for US persons only. Where a W-8BEN is on file, US-source dividends are reported on a 1042-S instead. E*TRADE's own account statement confirms accounts subject to tax reporting get either a 1099 (US accounts) or a 1042-S (foreign accounts) — never both. A W-8BEN that has lapsed (renewed every three years) shows up as withholding at 30% on dividends or 24% on sale proceeds rather than the lower treaty rate.
Mistakes these documents invite for UK tax
- The cost basis on the document is not the UK base cost. E*TRADE's cost basis figures follow US rules — usually what was paid, or nothing at all for a nil-cost RSU. Under UK Capital Gains Tax, the base cost of a nil-cost RSU is the market value at vest that was already charged to Income Tax, not the price paid (Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992 s119A; HMRC Capital Gains Manual CG56337 and CG56384).
- A dollar figure is not a sterling figure. Where a document states a value in dollars, UK Capital Gains Tax converts each leg separately — the acquisition at the rate for its own date, the disposal at the rate for its own date — never as a single dollar gain converted once, and never at the sterling actually received after a later transfer (HMRC Capital Gains Manual CG78310).
- Shares sold to cover the tax are still a disposal. HMRC treats the whole award as acquired first, so shares sold on the vest day to pay the tax are a same-day disposal in their own right — counted in the number of disposals and in the proceeds, even where the gain on them is nil (HMRC guidance, Employment Related Securities Bulletin 63, January 2026; ERSM140095).
