Charles Schwab Equity Award Center documents, for a UK participant
Tracepaper is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Charles Schwab in any way. This page is written from Schwab's own public help pages and its export format, to help a UK participant find their own documents — not from any document with a real person's figures on it.
What each document is called, and where it is found
Schwab publishes no participant sample statement or release confirmation, so the routes below come from its own help pages and from the columns its Equity Awards history export actually carries.
| Document | Where it is found | Does the app read it |
|---|---|---|
| 1099-B (US persons only) | Statements tab → Account drop-down → Equity Award Center → turn on the Tax Forms filter → Search. | Not yet |
| Form 3922 (ESPP purchase, US only) | The same Tax Forms filter as the 1099-B. | Not yet |
| Statements | The Statements tab, with the Equity Award Center account selected. | Not yet |
| Equity Awards history export (JSON or CSV) — the vest ("Lapse"), vest fair market value, shares withheld, sales | client.schwab.com/app/accounts/history → Equity Award Center → date range "Previous 4 Years" → Search → Export; repeat for older years. | Not yet |
| Release / vest confirmation (PDF), trade confirmation | Not recorded yet — no Schwab guide found names a downloadable release confirmation or where it sits. | Reads — measured on invented documents only |
The release confirmation reading above has been tested on a layout built from the vocabulary Schwab's own export actually uses ("Lapse" for a vest, its VestFairMarketValue and SharesWithheld columns) rather than from a PDF sample, because Schwab publishes no participant sample. Everything else in the table is untested against a Schwab-specific layout.
What a UK participant does not receive
A UK participant who is not a US taxpayer will not receive a 1099-B or a Form 3922 — both are US tax forms, for US persons only. Where a W-8BEN is on file, US-source dividends are reported on a 1042-S instead. A W-8BEN that has lapsed (it is renewed every three years) shows up as withholding at 30% on dividends or 24% on sale proceeds rather than the lower treaty rate.
Mistakes these documents invite for UK tax
- The cost basis on the document is not the UK base cost. Schwab's cost basis figures follow US rules — usually what was paid, or nothing at all for a nil-cost RSU. Under UK Capital Gains Tax, the base cost of a nil-cost RSU is the market value at vest that was already charged to Income Tax, not the price paid (Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992 s119A; HMRC Capital Gains Manual CG56337 and CG56384).
- A dollar figure is not a sterling figure. Where a document states a value in dollars, UK Capital Gains Tax converts each leg separately — the acquisition at the rate for its own date, the disposal at the rate for its own date — never as a single dollar gain converted once, and never at the sterling actually received after a later transfer (HMRC Capital Gains Manual CG78310).
- Shares sold to cover the tax are still a disposal. HMRC treats the whole award as acquired first, so shares sold on the vest day to pay the tax are a same-day disposal in their own right — counted in the number of disposals and in the proceeds, even where the gain on them is nil (HMRC guidance, Employment Related Securities Bulletin 63, January 2026; ERSM140095).
